Lisbon, a gateway to the world
Lisbon’s bond with water is indissoluble, thanks to the Rio Tejo that runs along it for a few kilometers before throwing itself into the Atlantic Ocean. Just before the mouth – between the two famous bridges of the Lusitanian capital, the Vasco da Gama and April 25, – there is a building that has revolutionized the view of the city from the river, without hiding the architectural works and the most ancient buildings. : is the new Cruise Ship Terminal, designed by the great Portuguese architect João Luís Carrilho da Graça, a modern gateway to the city for those arriving from the sea literally resting on the waters of the Tejo, an innovative building in which the Diasen solutions have found application in many strategic areas of the structure.
The technical pillars of the intervention
Diasen was the protagonist in the construction of the new Terminal of the cruise ships of the Port of Lisbon, thanks to its systems for thermal, acoustic and dehumidification insulation , applied on over 30,000 m < sup> 2 of walls and ceilings.
The cork-based mortar Diathonite Evolution was used to thermally insulate the ceilings of the underground garages from the rooms on the ground floor of the structure, which house shops and waiting rooms.
Diathonite Evolution was sprayed on the concrete surfaces, previously treated with the admixture aid Aquabond. The mortar, reinforced with Polites 140 glass fiber mesh, was applied with an average thickness of 3 cm and smoothed first with Argacem HP then with Argacem Ultrafine to make smooths the surface on which the Acrilid Protect Coating finish has been applied to complete the system.

The Diathonite Deumix mortar was applied on the walls of the basement and ground floors , to protect them from rising damp which can affect the structure of a building overlooking a important river.
The Diathonite Acoustix mortar was, on the other hand, used to eliminate reverberation in passenger transit areas and commercial areas and to acoustically insulate technical environments and control and security rooms where there are machinery. Diathonite Acoustix was applied with thicknesses ranging from 3 to 5 cm.
The structure has received important international awards winning prizes such as:
– Best Public Project in 2017 and 2018;
– Europe’s Leading Cruise Port in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020;
– Prémio Valmor and Municipal de Arquitetura in 2017;
This project has literally changed the landscape of the Portuguese capital and is the new gateway to the city for millions of tourists who arrive in Lisbon from all over the world via cruise ships.
The masterpiece by João Luís Carrilho da Graça represents the new gateway to the Portuguese capital for all tourists arriving by sea. A project that does not change the landscape of the Lusitanian city, but rather enhances it, offering a new miradouro over it, a panoramic roof that offers a 360° view that goes from the River Tejo to the historic center of Lisbon passing through the beautiful 25 de Abril bridge.
Thermal conductivity
λ: 0.045 W/mK
Thanks to the right mix of carefully selected natural raw materials, the product achieves very high thermal insulation performance.
Breathability
μ = 3
Walls free to breathe. Thanks to the high permeability, the humidity of the interior is perfectly balanced, thus avoiding the formation of mold and condensation.
Absorption
NRC = 0,75
Average between the frequencies 250HZ, 500HZ, 1000HZ, and 2000HZ which describes the sound absorption performance of a material.
The new Cruise Ship Terminal was designed by the Portuguese architect João Luís Carrilho da Graça . To understand the stature of the project, we rely on his words, which express not only his idea of architecture, but also the inspiration for this revolutionary project for the Portuguese capital:
“Architectural projects are always built in a context within another context, which is at the same time territorial, topographical, landscape and urban. After all, everything must dialogue with and between these different components. ”
(João Luís Carrilho da Graça)
